Understanding the Difference Between Addiction Treatment Programs

When finding the right addiction treatment program for you, it’s essential to understand the different available levels of care. The three main types of addiction treatment programs are inpatient, day, and outpatient.

Inpatient Treatment

Inpatient treatment provides around-the-clock care in a hospital setting. This level of care is typically for people with severe addiction who also have other health complications. Inpatient treatment usually lasts 28 to 30 days. Most of a person’s day is spent in treatment sessions to provide the most comprehensive care.

Day Treatment

Day treatment offers patients most of the same amenities as inpatient treatment but allows patients to return home at night. This level of care typically lasts two to four weeks and is for patients with moderate addiction. The type of services that you can expect in a day treatment includes individual therapy, group therapy, and medical care. Patients in day treatment will spend about six hours a day, five days a week, in treatment sessions.

Outpatient Treatment

Outpatient programs provide treatment during the day but allow patients to return home at night. This level of care is for people with less-severe addiction. Outpatient treatment usually lasts eight to 12 weeks. The type of services that you can expect in outpatient treatment includes individual therapy, group therapy, and medical care. Patients in outpatient treatment will spend about three hours a day in treatment sessions three days a week. Sometimes outpatient can be more involved, like an intensive outpatient program providing more hours of care than a standard outpatient program.
